Community colleges in Nebraska evolved from a combination of a local junior college, state vocational/technical colleges and area vocational/technical schools. In 1971, the Nebraska Legislature pulled these varied postsecondary institutions into a single system of two-year colleges, and in 1975, established six community college areas, four of which have multiple campuses. In 1993, the legislature revised and expanded the colleges' original role and mission of occupational education and created comprehensive community colleges. In addition to the six community college areas, the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture is an associate degree-granting branch of the University of Nebraska. Nebraska also has two federally supported tribal colleges. Junior college is an affordable option for students looking to pursue technical or career training, an associate's degree, or to prepare to transfer to a four-year university.
