The origins of the South Carolina Technical College system are in the 1961 legislation that created an Advisory Committee for Technical Training. Concerned about the migration of young people out of the state and a lack of state industry, the legislature sought to provide training for established industry and provide high school graduates with the postsecondary technical training they needed to gain employment as technicians. The first technical institution was opened in Greenville in 1962, and within four years, an additional nine facilities were providing training.
