Lancaster, Pa., is a city of nearly 60,000 people located in southeastern Pennsylvania, about 70 miles west of Philadelphia, and has claims to the title of Oldest Inland City in the U.S. The city's cutting-edge arts scene and historical architecture make Lancaster a great place to live, work and study.

Lancaster colleges

The sturdy arts and culture scene in Lancaster is energized by the presence of the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, or PCA&D, a small private liberal arts college for students with strong artistic and academic skills that offers Bachelor's of Fine Art degrees in seven disciplines. Just 264 students are enrolled at PCA&D, and tuition was $18,700 per year in 2012.

Just down the road from Lancaster is Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Founded as a teacher's college in 1855, Millersville University now offers more than 50 graduate degrees and certificates alongside nearly 100 undergraduate programs of study. Total enrollment for the 2011-2012 academic year came to 8,729, with 1,125 students enrolled in graduate programs. Tuition for in-state students, not counting books, supplies, housing or other expenses, was last reported at $8,361.

Lancaster economy

The job market in Lancaster is on the rise, showing a 4.2 percent overall increase in average weekly wages from September 2010 to September 2011. Office, sales and production occupations compose the largest chunk of the Lancaster workforce, representing a combined total of about 39 percent of jobs in the region. Lancaster General Hospital and Mutual Assistance Group were the two largest employers in the area as of 2011, and educational institutions at all levels -- elementary, middle, secondary, baccalaureate and graduate -- are present in the top 50.
