Vanderbilt University is another school that residents of Madison could consider. It is comprised of 10 schools that award undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees in areas of study such as the arts and sciences, education, engineering, human development, medicine, and music. More than 6,000 students take advantage of educational opportunities there. Another option is Tennessee State University, which boasts 38 undergraduate majors, 22 master's degrees and seven doctoral programs. For the 6,000-plus undergraduates enrolled there, studies are available in fields ranging from agriculture and the arts to engineering and the health sciences. Tuition and fees for Tennessee State for in-state students are $6,346 while out-of-state students pay closer to $20,000.

If you've got your sights set on a two-year education, Nashville State Community College could be a solid choice. The school offers more than 80 programs and its top five majors in the fall of 2011 were: business management, computer networking, general technology, police science, and visual communications. Tuition costs for in-state students were $129 per credit hour while out-of-state students pay more at about $530 per credit hour.
