El Paso, Texas helps prove the adage that everything is bigger in Texas true. This town of about 800,000 people is filled with buildings, numerous museums and theatres, and most importantly, educational and business offerings, for those wanting to advance in their career opportunities.

El Paso colleges

There are many colleges in El Paso for residents and students to choose from. The main one is The University of Texas at El Paso. This school of about 18,000 students offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate fields of study, ranging from nurse practitioner to physical therapy. Tuition is about $7,000 a year for in-state students and $16,000 for out-of-state students.

There are two additional options for students seeking shorter-term training. These include the main community college in El Paso called El Paso Community College as well as a vocational school called Western Technical College, or WTC. At El Paso Community College, students can choose from more than 130 programs at the certificate and associate degree level as well as study in subject areas such as communication and teaching. The school has guaranteed transfer agreements with local colleges and offers a low tuition at about $2,000 a year for in-state students and $2,500 for out-of-state students. WTC offers more than 10 associate degree and certificate programs in a variety of subjects such as automotive technology and massage therapy. It tries to provide a well-rounded experience for students with staff helping those new-to-town find a place to live.

El Paso economy

The main industries in El Paso are education and health care, making up nearly 25 percent of the workforce. The top five employers in town are Dish Network, GC Services, T&T Staff Management LP, Tenet Healthcare Ltd., and University Medical Center. With educational opportunities from vocational training to four-year schooling available and a wealth of available entertainment -- a zoo, four state parks, a museum, outdoor music, and more -- El Paso could be the place to seek the training you need.
