population was 297,052. Lake County was created
on May 13, 1887 from Orange County and Sumter County. The county
seat is
Tavares, and its largest city is Clermont. This county is named

As reported by the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,156 square miles (2,995 km2), of which, 953 square miles (2,469 km2) of it is land and 203 square miles (526 km2) of it (17.58%) is water.
Sugarloaf Mountain, located along the western shore of Lake Apopka in Lake County, Florida, is the northernmost named upland associated with the Lake Wales Ridge, a series of sand hills running south to Highlands County.
