Florida Counties

There are sixty-seven counties in the state of Florida. In 1821, there were only two Counties in Florida: Escambia to the west and St. Johns to the east. From these two Counties were formed 67 today. Its last county was created in 1925 with the formation of Gilchrist County from a segment of Alachua County.

Lake County is a county located in the state of Florida. Based on the 2010 census, the population was 297,052. Lake County was created on May 13, 1887 from Orange County and Sumter County. The county seat is Tavares, and its largest city is Clermont. This county is named for the many lakes in the region.

Lake County is included in the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Lake County History

Lake County was created in 1887 from portions of Sumter County, Florida and Orange County, Florida. The county is named for the numerous lakes in the area. There are approximately 1,400 named lakes.

Geography: Land and Water

As reported by the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,156 square miles (2,995 km2), of which, 953 square miles (2,469 km2) of it is land and 203 square miles (526 km2) of it (17.58%) is water.

Sugarloaf Mountain, located along the western shore of Lake Apopka in Lake County, Florida, is the northernmost named upland associated with the Lake Wales Ridge, a series of sand hills running south to Highlands County.
